Gerald Nelson Bf-109 G10 1/5
Gerald Nelson:
This is truly an international bird. It has parts made in six different countries if you don’t count the electronics!
For power it has a Desert Aircraft DA-50R 50cc engine, Biela 20x10 semi scale three bladed prop. It has a 2 3/4” extension on the hub that was made by Sierra and purchased from Ziroli. The spinner isn’t settled yet. I have a Fliteskin spinner that is aluminum and carbon fiber, a JP Warbirds spinner that is aluminum and fiberglass, and a pair of 3D printed spinners made of PLA+ from DangerZone graphics that I’ve been experimenting with. The printed ones may turn to static display… JP Warbirds made the dummy exhaust stacks and I bought a FG cowl from JP Warbirds that I cut up and epoxied over the top of the built up one that came with the kit. Make sure you tell your customers that JP Warbirds cowl will not fit with modification. I’m hoping to hinge at least one side of it yet, or maybe pull a mold from it before I paint it so I can do both. I recently mounted the dummy MG 131 barrels from JP Warbirds.
The landing gear is Sierra. I made the tailwheel bracket myself because he only sells a strut for the tailwheel. The wheels came from Fliteskin and are made for an earlier Friedrich because they are the spoked variety. I’m going to have to make a cover to make them Gustav, but the tire tread is right. I bought the old style wheel well bulges for the upper wing surfaces from JP Warbirds. The tailwheel is a DuBro small main wheel that I bored out to fit.
The cockpit kit is from AeroCockpit, except for the gunsight which is JP Warbirds. I scratch built the seat, floor and footrests, and the cannon cover.
The fabric control surfaces are Sig Koverall and doped. The pinking tape came from Dynamic Balsa.
The drop tank is second hand but was originally made by FighterAces. The guy I bought it from made the escutcheon for it and was kind enough to sell me the one he had and made another for himself.
I’ve gathered bits of old thin leather work gloves to use for the wheel well linings and tailwheel boot. I bought small zippers for it too.
The RX is the Spektrum AR 10360T with a mix of HiTec and JR 10kg servos. I’m actually not exactly sure what I put in there because I haven’t cut the access hatches yet since I skimmed the wing. I know everything is 10kg though because that’s what you said to use on the plan. The receiver battery is the Spektrum 7.2v LiFe smart battery and I have a 4.8v NiMh on the ignition.
I hope that’s what you wanted, and if I forgot to mention something just let me know and I’ll get right back to you. I just recently mounted the belly pan, which is one of the final obstacles before I fly it. I have two DA-50s and unfortunately both are on their way shortly to be serviced by Desert Aircraft so that’s going to be the real hold up. Next time I get everything put back together I’ll write down the control movement measurements just so you know what I set it up for. The primer I’m using is KlassKote two part epoxy, and the paint is Warbird Color acrylics. I have all that right now, just waiting for it’s turn.
